The promise that there would be a Messiah, a Saviour born in Bethlehem had been written and passed on from generation to generation. Jesus Christ would be born, wrapped in swaddling clothes, and placed in a manager. It was time for the prophecy to be fulfilled, the promise to be fulfilled and the Christ child to be born in a stable and placed in a manager.
